22 Jun 2010 - Volkswagen Golf (1998-05) Review
VW Golf takes the lead and is a class winner
The mk4 Golf pretty much set the benchmark for all others to follow. Its simple design and solid status have made it one of the most popular hatchbacks for many years.
Build quality is second to none and although feeling slightly heavy it offers a sense of assurance not usually found in this class. Interior design is functional if a little dull but again the quality and feel overide any shortcomings.
On the road the mk4 feels very sure footed, good handling and a sense of purpose providing a great ride. Only negatives been the ride can seem a little harsh on some roads.
Petrol engines are ok but are no match to the diesel variants. 115, 130 and 150bhp models are all economical and fast. SDI offers economy without the thrills.
High milers still command a healthy price so residual values are good which offset high purchase price.
